Greek Islands
Greece
Steeped in history and surrounded by sandy beaches and azure seas, these islands are no longer the preserve of the package holiday - a number of excellent new boutique hotels has made some of them ideal destinations for a luxurious tailormade holiday as well.
Cosmopolitan Mykonos is renowned for its nightlife (it has been described as the Ibiza of the Aegean, but the jury is out as to whether that's a good thing or not), trademark windmills and its attractive ‘capital’ Hora, considered one of the most beautiful towns in the Cyclades. Hora boasts the photogenic ‘Little Venice’ area, where the buildings overhang the sea, superb shopping, and restaurants ranging from chic sushi bars to cosy tavernas.
Nearby, the little-known island of Paros is home to a selection of beautiful coves and beaches dotted with charming tavernas. For those who are keen on a spot of culture, archaeological sites and churches are a drachma a dozen. Those after a bit more action should enjoy Paros’ excellent kite-surfing and diving.
Crescent-shaped Santorini is perhaps the most famous Greek island, and physically one of the most spectacular islands in the world, with its giant sea-filled caldera created by an ancient volcanic eruption. The picturesque towns of Fira and Ia cling to the faces of towering cliffs that plunge straight into the sea. Santorini has black-sand beaches, archetypal Cycladic architecture with dazzling whitewashed houses and blue-domed roofs, and the archaeological wonders of Akrotiri and ancient Thera.
Crete has great diversity and offers everything from dramatic mountain scenery, golden beaches and secluded coves to ancient Minoan ruins and remote rural villages. It has the added attraction of direct scheduled flights from the UK, making it newly accessible for short breaks, and the Elounda peninsula is home to some of the finest hotels in Greece.
Each island offers something slightly different and has its own character, but all have something for everyone – sun-worshippers, water-sports enthusiasts, avid clubbers and culture vultures will find plenty to satisfy them.

Family HalkidikiGreeceLocated on the Greek mainland in the northern Aegean, Halkidiki is easily recognisable on a map by the trident-like peninsulas that jut into the sea. The westernmost of these is called the Kassandra Peninsula, and the Sani Resort is found here. |

Private Hire GreeceGreeceFew family holiday destinations fit the bill as much as a Greek island villa week. Good weather is all but guaranteed, the food is palatable to even the fussiest of feeders and there's plenty of activity on offer for tweenagers and teens too. |
