Life is in the detail

Sit up at night on a liveaboard in the Galapagos, and you might be lucky enough to spot giant manta rays breaching the water. It’s a rare and exciting sight to behold.

My travels

Travel Things I Want To Do Before I Die

  • Explore the rainforests of Borneo
  • Dive with humpback whales
  • Raja Ampat and Komodo Island
  • Galapagos, at least one more time

Best Moments

  • While sailing the Galapagos I swam with some very playful and inquisitive sea lions. They were swimming circles around me, blowing bubbles and loop-the-looping underneath me. The trip as a whole was utterly unforgettable and an experience I am dying to repeat.
  • Diving in the Maldives is always amazing, but finding myself in the middle of a giant manta feeding frenzy left me speechless. Perched amongst a shoal of yellow snapper, I had countless rays flying around me, gracefully swooping within inches of my head.
  • Meeting Lonesome George. Sadly he has died now, but he was the last tortoise of his subspecies in the Galapagos and has shed valuable light on the fragility of the eco system there and the conservation needed for endangered animals throughout the world.
  • Spending a week sailing and diving the Great Barrier Reef was just unreal. Diving with sharks, surrounded by millions of jelly fish (don't worry you have sting suits on) and enjoying drift dives past coral of every colour imaginable; the diversity of marine life there was incredible.

Toughest Travel Moment

  • A very rare diving emergency saw a beginner diver run out of air in the Galapagos. The water there is cold and the currents are strong, it is more appropriate for more experienced divers. A quick thinking instructor, a cool head and my PADI training ensured a disaster was averted, but it is an important reminder why we have rigorous qualifications before we can get in the water.

Weirdest Travel Moment

  • Constantly having to wash my clothes in the local river while staying in the Amazon. It took me a while to realise a family of parrots were using my makeshift clothes line as their perch.
