Imagine looking down an untouched, untracked powder slope stretching infinitely into the distance. Imagine an endless run from the open alpine glacier, through changeable terrain, around or over drop-offs, down through enchanted forests to the valley floor. Then imagine a helicopter waiting at the bottom to take you up so you can do it all over again. This is heli-skiing in British Columbia, Canada.

Our partner in Canada, Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing, has been a family run operation for 35 years. Operations are located in the small town of Blue River, British Columbia, in the heart of the Cariboos and Monashees, two massive mountain ranges divided by the North Thompson Valley. This area is world famous for its majestic mountains and its abundance of powder snow. From November to May the powder is unmatched anywhere in the world. The extensive skiing area encompasses over 1,000 peaks and runs stretched over 3,125 square miles. The longest run is the aptly named 1,645m vertical drop Legburner.

The statistics on repeat business speak volumes. 65% of the guests return every year with 20% returning every other year.

On a typical day, clients will ski eight to twelve runs covering up to 50,000 vertical feet. Some push for up to 25 runs with the record descent in one day at 363,000 vertical feet! At the end of a hard day skiing, enjoy an invigorating massage, a great meal and peaceful rest to get ready for more powder.

Most guides are certified with the Canadian Ski Guides Association, others have received equivalent training and certification in different countries. Some of the Mike Wiegele guides have served the company for over 20 years and many for over 10 years.

Daily ski areas are selected with consideration for weather conditions and snow stability. Data collection starts daily at 5AM with a summary of the finding passed on guides and pilots by 0700 in time for the day ahead.

The medical clinic is located in the Guides House and is equipped to meet the medical needs of our skiing guests. There is also a Red Cross outpost located in Blue River. Clearwater hospital is located within 30 minutes flight.

A fleet of four Bell 212 and five A-Star aircrafts are available. Each of the Bell 212 helicopters carries up to ten guests and two guides and can serve as many as three groups. The A-Star carries up to four guests and one guide and can serve up to four groups.

Many first time heli-skiers wonder whether they are skilled enough for helicopter skiing. Anyone who feels reasonably comfortable and can ski with confidence on the steeper slopes in the typical ski resort environment should be OK. Ski guides and ski coordinators will make a conscientious effort to introduce everyone to the fundamentals of helicopter skiing in a comfortable manner, always taking into consideration existing techniques and skiing rhythms in order to help progression to the next level.

3) A-Star Elite accommodates the expert skier, boarder and telemarker.
4) 212 Private features one group of up to ten skiing friends with two guides and includes up to ten hours flying time.
5) 212 Semi-private features two groups of up to ten skiing friends with two guides per group and includes up to fifteen hours flying time.
6) A-Star Private features one group of up to four skiing friends with one guide and includes up to ten hours flying time.
7) A-Star Semi-private features two groups of up to four skiing friends with two guides and includes up to fifteen hours flying time.
