Benguerra Island, part of the Bazaruto Archipelago just off the southern coast of Mozambique, is home to two of the country’s finest beach resorts: Marlin Lodge and Benguerra Lodge.

Marlin Lodge is a perfect blend of luxurious hotel and laid-back African beach resort and consists of 19 en-suite cabanas stretched along the beach of Flamingo Bay. Each has views of the ocean, and a private patio with a walkway down to the white sand beach. The whole lodge is beautifully integrated into the sensitive environment, with the cabanas connected by elevated walkways to the main area.

The Bazaruto Archipelago is a National Marine Park and its unspoilt waters and reefs offer some of the finest scuba diving sites and deep-sea fishing in the world. Marlin Lodge has a fully equipped dive and snorkel centre that allows guests to explore this extraordinary underwater world. A range of other watersports and activities are available, including kite surfing, windsurfing, waterskiing and knee boarding, or guests can just relax by the pool, enjoy the incredible tranquillity of the island, and watch the day drift by. Boat trips to neighbouring islands are also possible, and the lodge has a beauty and wellness centre offering a range of treatments. Meals at Marlin Lodge are a classic blend of Afro-Asian and Portuguese flavours, served either in the dining room or on the beach amid swaying palms and flaming torches.

Sharing the island with Marlin Lodge is the luxurious beach retreat of Benguerra Lodge. The lodge blends into a natural acacia and mahogany forest bordering Benguerra Bay and is encircled by white-sand beaches, coral reefs and clear turquoise seas. Accommodation consists of eleven open-sided, thatched cabanas built on stilts and scattered around the main lodge building. Each has an en-suite bathroom and a veranda looking out to sea. This is barefoot luxury at its most desirable.

Benguerra lies inside the Bazaruto National Park and the clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean are a paradise for snorkellers and scuba divers. The lodge has a fully equipped dive school to allow guests to explore this underwater world. The marine ecosystem includes well-preserved coral reefs and one of the last refuges of the dugong (also known as a 'sea cow'). Other activities on offer include deep-sea fishing and island walks, or you can just relax in the shade of a beach umbrella or by the freshwater swimming pool. Delicious fresh seafood forms the basis of the Portuguese-influenced cuisine, and in the evenings you can enjoy a sunset cruise on a traditional dhow to see the flamingoes. Altogether, Benguerra offers a wonderful combination of marine safari and the perfect beach holiday.
