While Rwanda remains scarred by the genocide of 1994, in recent years the situation has drastically improved with much of the infrastructure rebuilt, the economy resurrected and tourism beginning to thrive once again.

The opening of the new Governors Camp is particularly significant. Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is situated in the foothills of the imposing Virunga chain of 15,000ft volcanoes stretching through Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The lodge is only a 2 hour drive from Kigali and 2 miles from the main entrance to the Parc National des Volcans in Northwest Rwanda.

Magnificent views take in the verdant slopes of the volcano range to the North and over agricultural lowlands to the South. Guests make the short journey to the park headquarters each morning for their gorilla trek. Approximately half of the world’s wild population of Mountain Gorilla is resident on the Rwandan slopes of Virunga. Seven habituated families of gorillas are visited, and these families have from seven to over thirty-five individuals in each.

Aside from gorilla trekking, Saybyinyo Silver Back Lodge provides the perfect base from which to explore the various surrounding lakes, visit the market town of Ruhengeri, the Dian Fossey’s Research Centre and the deeply poignant but fascinating genocide memorials.
