HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Oustanding regional cooking > Historic towns > Elegant hotels
Tuscany and Umbria are, even by Italian standards, regions of outstanding natural beauty and cultural richness. Tuscany is of course famous for its well-preserved towns, packed with architectural and artistic treasures, all surrounded by stunning landscapes of rolling hills and cypress trees.
Siena has perhaps Italy’s finest medieval square, host to the famous annual Palio; San Gimignano, with its soaring towers, is a wonderfully preserved medieval city; Florence has an abundance of Renaissance treasures, a stunning duomo, the Uffizi gallery and the Ponte Vecchio.
Added to this, Tuscany has miles of Mediterranean coastline, and Pisa with its leaning tower.
Landlocked Umbria, with its steep hills, olive groves and terraced vineyards, is the ancient heart of Italy - every bit the equal of its more famous neighbour, but with the added advantage of being far less crowded.
Umbria’s towns – Perugia, Assisi and Orvieto to name just three - house many artistic treasures and excellent restaurants, and when you have had your fill of culture, there are mountains and wilderness to explore.
Altogether, these are two of the most inviting regions, not just of Italy, but of Europe as a whole.
Stay at the Terme di Saturnia, a luxurious resort and spa in the depths of rural Tuscany, which uses natural thermal springs to provide a huge range of restorative treatments.
Another excellent spa is the Fonteverde hotel & spa, set in the hills close to Siena. Mineral-rich natural spring waters are again used to provide a range of exclusive treatments.
Alternatively, Villa Fontelunga is a stylish and relaxing retreat of just a few rooms, set amid olive groves and beautiful countryside close to the hilltop town of Cortona. Perfect for a relaxing break or the ideal base from which to explore Tuscany.
A new addition to our portfolio is Villa Mangiacane. Set on a 300-hectare estate of vineyards, olive groves and forest just 8 miles from Florence, the villa is said to have been designed by Michelangelo.
In Umbria, Original Travel offers one of the finest former palace hotels in the region, Palazzo Terranova. Run by an English couple, and with just twelve rooms, the property enjoys panoramic views over the wooded slopes of the Tiber valley.
