Sardinia remains an enigmatic mix of extreme glamour in the Costa Smeralda resorts and hotels in the north-east, while the rest of the island continues relatively untapped, maintaining the way of life developed over thousands of years. The hilly inland area is particularly unspoilt as the main hotels congregate on the beaches.

La Coluccia is a strikingly modern design hotel set on the coast about 30 miles from Olbia. A variety of watersports are available at the sandy beach, and the location in the north west corner of the island means it remains relatively untouched.

The Hotel Pitrizza is a sophisticated, 55-room sanctuary carved into a small granite headland on the exclusive stretch of shoreline in north-east Sardinia that is the famous Costa Smeralda. Set back behind a small private beach, swathes of immaculate lawn run up to the mostly single storey stone buildings, and then just roll on up across the roofs, occasionally with a gardener perched on top mowing.

Located on the southern coast, Forte Village Resort has a reputation as one of the very best family destinations in the Mediterranean. The resort, with over 700 staff, offers a wide range of choice from eight different styles of accommodation and several restaurants, serving food from around the world, and two Michelin star restaurants. Added to this is a huge list of activities including tennis, horse-riding, sailing and diving, and childrens' facilities that are second to none.

Alternatively, in the mountainous interior, stay at Su Gologone, a four-star country hotel on the lower slopes of the Supramonte mountains in east-central Sardinia. Enjoy the peaceful, relaxed atmosphere and a range of activities such as hiking and horse-riding.

A cheaper option in the Costa Smeralda region is the charming 4* Le Ginestre, which has a stunning location looking over the sea, and is within easy reach of several good beaches.
