The Pellicano Hotel, on Tuscany’s Argentario peninsula, is a fantastic spot for those looking for style and privacy. The hotel's central building and cottages are surrounded by centuries-old olive trees set in an extensive garden.The excellent cuisine is Italian and international and the chef has worked in several Michelin starred restaurants. The charming fishing village of Porto Ercole is just 4 km away; the medieval town of Capalbio lies only thirty minutes distant.

La Posta Vecchia is a sumptuously converted 17th century villa, just 40 minutes from central Rome. The hotel sits in fifteen acres of beautiful Italian gardens overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Between 1960 and 1975 La Posta Vecchia was the Italian residence of Jean Paul Getty. He spent five years restoring the property to its original splendour and furnished it with the help of Professor Federico Zeri, curator of the Getty Museum in California. All of the furnishings have remained unchanged since Getty's day, giving La Posta Vecchia not only its luxurious allure, but historical significance as well. During the restoration process, the remains of two ancient Roman villas were discovered beneath the foundations. Intricate mosaics and other artefacts found were saved and are housed in a private museum, which is open to hotel guests every day. Activities available include mountain biking, riding, fishing, sailing, diving, and kayaking. Visits to the nearby medieval town of Tarquinia or the Etruscan city of Ceveteri can also easily be arranged.

The Amalfi coastline is considered by many to be the most beautiful in all of the Mediterranean, with the towns of Amalfi, Ravello and Positano all famed for their hotels, hospitality and cuisine. A playground for the rich and famous in summer, spring and autumn are often a better time of year to go, and the chances of finding a hotel room are far higher.

In Positano, the family-run Sirenuse remains one of the classic hotels of southern Italy, with each room offering breathtaking views over the town and the sea beyond. Beautiful antique furniture fills the hotel, and the three restaurants offer some of the finest food in the region.

Up the winding coastal road, lies another cliff-top property with manicured gardens and lemon groves leading down to the water’s edge. The Santa Caterina hotel is a byword for comfort and elegance, just a mile outside the town of Amalfi. The region lends itself to walking or boating excursions, or simply doing nothing at all, and indulging in the Italian passion for people watching.

Finally for views that top the lot try Hotel Caruso in Ravello, recently reinvented and now one of the ulitmate Amalfi properties.

On the other side of the country, stay at the San Domenico or Torre Coccaro Masserias (fortified farmhouses) on the coast of Puglia. Here you can enjoy private beaches, excellent thalasso-therapy spas, tennis, golf and a range of watersports.
