HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Boat trips round Capri > Panoramic views over the Bay of Naples from the island of Ischia > An evening passeggiata
Capri and Ischia, the Italian islands of the Bay of Naples have been sought-after summer holiday retreats since Roman times. Rising dramatically from the blue-green waters of the Mediterranean at either side of the bay are the mountainous islands of Capri and Ischia. Both are reachable by hydrofoil from Naples in about 45 minutes and have excellent hotels at which to relax and indulge in la dolce vita.
Capri, the smaller of the two islands, has been popular since Caesar Augustus first took a shine to it in 29BC. Emperor Tiberius ruled the Roman Empire from here for the last decade of his life and the remains of his lavish imperial villas can still be seen. More recently, Capri has been a favoured luxury holiday haunt for writers, artists and film stars.
Take the chairlift up Monte Solaro for wonderful panoramic views over the Bay of Naples, with Mount Vesuvius in the distance, or go by boat to the famous sea cave known as the Blue Grotto, with its translucent waters. Other attractions in Capri include scenic walks and visits to the Villa San Michele or Villa Jovis. In the evenings, join the locals on a passeggiata around Capri town, browse the boutique-lined alleyways and sip bellinis in the Piazzetta.
Base yourself at the immaculate Capri Palace, the luxury hotel perched high above the sea in the hilltop village of Anacapri, and enjoy one of the best spas in Europe and Michelin-starred cuisine. Alternatively, JK Place is a stylish villa overlooking the Marina Grande, just a few minutes from Capri town.
A short hop across the bay brings you to Ischia, long renowned for its abundant thermal springs and their mineral-rich waters and mud and makes for another wonderful luxury holiday destination.
Ischia has numerous beaches, at some of which hot thermal waters mix with the seawater. Other attractions include the beautiful gardens of La Mortella, the Castello Aragonese (built on a small island and linked to the main town by a stone footbridge) and Villa La Colombaia, former residence of the film director Visconti.
Conclude your holiday to Ischia at the Mezzatorre Resort & Spa, set in unspoilt surroundings on the north-western side of the island and surrounded by seven hectares of gardens and Mediterranean pine scrub.
There is plenty to do whilst on holiday in both Capri and Ischia. These islands are easy to explore on foot or by scooter. Boat trips around the islands are easily arranged, as are excursions to Naples, the historic remains of Pompeii and Herculaneum, or the Amalfi Coast.
