Montenegro has long been forgotten by the UK travelling market. South of Croatia and a member state of the former Yugoslavia, an unfavourable association with Serbia has kept people away, and will continue to do so while misconceptions remain.

One of the main attractions of Montenegro is that the country offers some of the finest beaches in the Adriatic. From Herceg-Novi in the north to Ulcinj in the south, the 200-mile coast offers a beautiful variety of locations, with over 117 different beaches.

Montenegro's shoreline has everything from secret rocky coves that are only accessible by boat, to large stretches of wide sandy beach. Bounded by the clean, crystal clear waters of the Adriatic and a backdrop of mountains, fields, olive groves and heavily scented pinewoods, this is one of the most appealing corners of the Mediterranean.

Sveti Stefan is the most beautiful hotel in the country, and possibly the Adriatic. Set on a small island connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, this former fishing village has heavily fortified walls originally designed to ward off passing pirates, and has remained exactly the same since its construction over 500 years ago.
