HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Picture-postcard old town > Stunning hotel > Opening up to Western tourism post communism
Soon to become one of the most fashionable European cities to visit, Tallinn is really two cities in one. The small, medieval old town is perched on a steep hill overlooking the ever-growing financial quarter developing around the harbour.
Churches dominate the old town's skyline while glass-fronted banks increasingly characterise the new town, and the approach to the city is equally dramatic as the spire of St Olav's, at the summit of the Old Town, can be seen for miles around.
Few places in Europe exude such a sense of history as the old town, with its mish-mash of medieval walls and turrets, spires and twisting, cobbled streets. Wander along the narrow lanes between early medieval buildings, restored and repainted in bright colours, giving the old town a well-to-do feel that contrasts strongly with the grey Soviet architecture that dominates the newer parts of the town.
Tallinn is a city of long, pleasant summers and white winters. Cafés and boutiques are hidden away with doorways so low that you have to stoop to get inside. The city also boasts an exceptional, upbeat nightlife, when the famously good-looking residents really let their hair down.
The Three Sisters hotel is the finest place to stay in the Estonian capital, and reflects the style of the city that surrounds it, combining traditional architecture with modern touches inside. The three adjoining houses that make up the hotel date back to 1362 and were always known as the three sisters.
You can also combine a visit to Tallinn with a couple of days at Padaste Manor - a luxurious hotel and spa on the island of Muhu in the Baltic Sea, just off the Estonian coast. An immaculate rural retreat, Padaste Manor has just a dozen rooms and will show you a completely different side of Estonia. Padaste offers peaceful seclusion and a range of activities including horse-riding, fishing and nature walks, plus excellent food and wine.
