Rio de Janeiro has perhaps the most stunning physical setting of any city in the world. Lush green mountains, miles of sandy beaches, blue sea and a superb climate give Rio qualities that no other big city can match.

The legendary beachfront neighbourhoods of Copacabana and Ipanema are the most famous districts of Rio. Their long beaches (just two of many) are great places to soak up the sun and watch the Cariocas (as Rio residents are called) strutting their stuff. Take a long stroll along the famous black and white mosaic promenade fringing Copacabana, and enjoy a coconut or a caipirinha while admiring the skills of the volleyball and beach soccer players.

Of course, Rio is also synonymous with the feverish intensity of the world’s largest carnival. The spectacle of thousands of performers in outlandish costumes, accompanied by samba drummers and dancers is a unique experience.

But there is much more to Rio than beaches and carnival. Once the colonial capital, and still very much Brazil’s cultural capital, Rio has plenty to explore, from historic colonial-era neighbourhoods to the modernist architecture of Oscar Niemeyer. Climb the Corcovado peak with its iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer, arms outstretched, or take the cable car to the top of the landmark Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain) for fabulous views of the city.

In terms of culture, Rio boasts everything from ornate palaces, landscaped parks and fine museums, to football in the Maracanã stadium and a thriving live music scene. In short, Rio is everything its image suggests, and much more - a city quite unlike any other.
