Although it is the gateway to the island, Mallorca’s capital is often overlooked by the majority of tourists who head straight for the beaches or the hills. Palma has a great deal to offer though, and because of the ease of access (less than three hours flying time from London and numerous daily flights even in low season) it makes an ideal city break destination. Home to more than half the island’s population, Palma has a genuine Spanish feel to it rather than being overwhelmed by northern Europeans, and has a wide range of attractions, from cultural riches to excellent restaurants and a lively nightlife.

Modern Palma is an appealing blend of the traditional and the contemporary, with gothic churches and baroque palaces coupled with slick bars and designer boutiques. Chief of the cultural attractions is the magnificent gothic cathedral, La Seu, whose imposing bulk dominates the seafront. By night it is beautifully floodlit. Other highlights include the Almudaina Palace, once the residence of the Moorish caliphs, or just to wander the atmospheric medieval quarter with its narrow cobbled alleys.

For wining and dining, Palma has a great variety of options from typical tapas bars and cafes to simple fish restaurants to gourmet haute cuisine. The city also has some excellent shopping and a buzzing nightlife.

Palma also makes a perfect base from which to explore the rest of Mallorca, with all parts of the island easily accessible. The beaches of the east coast, the picturesque hilltop villages of the rugged Serra de Tramuntana, the remote Formentor peninsula of the far north or the vineyards around Binissalem are all within reach as day trip options.

Altogether, Palma is a stylish and sophisticated city and of course enjoys a great Mediterranean climate with an average of 300 days sunshine per year. Mild winters make it a good year-round destination.

In the La Lonja neighbourhood, at the heart of the historic old town, is the Puro - a hip boutique design hotel, with a lively bar and restaurant as well as its own beach club two kilometres away.

The Portixol is a bright, contemporary hotel and one of the city’s most fashionable meeting places. Located next to the marina, it is within easy walking distance of the town centre.

Alternatively, there is the immaculate Maricel, located on the seafront just a few kilometres west of central Palma.
