HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
The view from the top of Table Mountain, particularly after climbing it > Gourmet food and wine at Franschhoek > Sea-kayaking with whales at Hermanus.
Facing the ocean, and with Table Mountain as a towering backdrop, Cape Town enjoys arguably the most spectacular natural setting of any city in the world. Climbing the mountain (or catching the cable-car up) is well worth it for the spectacular views from the summit, or you could opt for the thrilling experience of a tandem paraglide flight over the city.
From Cape Town, catch a boat for the short journey across to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years behind bars, or head down to Cape Point - one of the great maritime landmarks, dubbed “the fairest cape in all the world” by Sir Francis Drake - to watch the power of the Atlantic and Indian ocean currents colliding. Other attractions include the colony of African penguins at Simonstown, good shopping in the city’s markets, and the lively bars and restaurants of the V&A Waterfront.
Just an hour’s drive inland from Cape Town, at the heart of the Cape winelands, is the historic town of Franschhoek. Founded in 1688 by French Huguenots who brought with them a Gallic appreciation of all things epicurean, Franschhoek is the gastronomic capital of South Africa, its many excellent restaurants offering a world-class gourmet experience. The vineyards around Franschhoek and nearby Stellenbosch produce some of the finest New World wines, which can be sampled on a tour of the local wine routes which pass through picturesque landscapes punctuated with characteristic Cape Dutch architecture.
Moving on from the winelands, head back to the coast and the small resort town of Hermanus, famous for its superb whale-watching, especially between May and December when the Southern Right whales are in residence in the bay. Other activities at Hermanus include sea-kayaking, deep-sea fishing and hiking, mountain biking or horse-riding in the local hills with their unique ‘fynbos’ heathland. Between them, these varied destinations offer the very best of the Cape.
