Kayak along the Turkish Mediterranean coast, staying in charming hotels or camping in secluded coves. This is the most serene and intimate way to explore an untouched stretch of the Turkish coast, away from the tourist beaches. Spend the morning in a kayak and the afternoon snorkelling, swimming or sunbathing.

Sea kayaking is the best way to visit secluded caves, beaches and historic monuments. Silent but for the sound of a paddle slicing through the water, or a flying fish flitting across the bow, this is exercise at its most serene. The crisp dry air, the azure sky and the snow-capped peaks beyond all create a harmony unlike any standard boat trip. The trip also includes some time spent kayaking on beautiful Lake Koygeciz, just inland.

Framed by the Taurus mountains, the cliffs bordering the Mediterranean provide great free-diving opportunities, while the beaches are ideal for a well-earned rest. Some of the best preserved rock tombs in Europe are clearly visible, carved into the cliffs high above the Dalyan estuary. Grill fresh fish and peppers on a barbecue before falling asleep to the sound of waves lapping the shore.

Combine this trip with a stay in Istanbul, whose streets evoke its long and colourful history. The city is a potent mix of East and West, blended together over the course of many centuries. Stay at the five-star Kempinski Ciragan Palace, the equally immaculate Four Seasons Istanbul, or the four-star boutique Hotel Ajia, on the Asian side of the Bosphorus. Eat breakfast on a roof terrace with outstanding views across the Bosphorus Strait that separates Europe from Asia.
