Combine a stay within the ancient medina walls of the vibrant city of Marrakech with a trip to the charismatic coastal town of Essaouira, just 60 miles to the west. The golden sandy beach here is blessed with some of the finest kite-surfing conditions in the world.

Marrakech is a vibrant city, where red-baked walls and multi-coloured carpets vie for the attention with the scent of spices and the flavours of tagine cooking.

Visit bustling souqs, where leather, silver and herbs can be bought over a glass of mint tea. As the sun sets, Djemaa el-Fna market square comes alive with food vendors, acrobats and apothecaries peddling ancient herbal cures.

Stay in a riad in the heart of the old Medina. The most photogenic town in a photogenic country, Essaouira has atmosphere and charm in abundance. Meander along narrow alleyways past busy stalls and donkey carts loaded with oranges, chocolate or the day’s catch of fish.

Kite-surfing is surprisingly easy to pick up, and with an enormous beach and a consistently powerful wind, Essaouira offers the perfect environment to learn this adventurous new sport. Original Travel has sourced the finest English-speaking instructors, and the latest equipment.

For surfers of a non-kiting persuasion, the break at Sidi Kaouki - just half an hour away - is one of the best on Africa's Atlantic Coast. Original Travel can arrange board hire, lessons and/or transfers.
