80 Senses #45… Watching wild chimpanzees in Mahale
The slopes of the Mahale Mountains in Western Tanzania are home to the world’s largest known population of wild chimpanzees. It doesn’t take long to see why the chimps love it; few natural environments are more seductive than Mahale National Park, with rivers tumbling down waterfalls to the shoreline through lush forest valleys. As a result, there is no place on Earth better to watch wild chimpanzees.
One particular group of 60 chimps live within trekking distance of the beautiful beachfront Greystoke Mahale camp. The group has become habituated to human presence by over two decades of contact with researchers, and guests at the camp can venture out into the forest to observe these endangered animals, our closest relatives, as they groom, wrestle and forage.
