In the aftermath of last March’s horrific tsunami, the rest of the world looked on in admiration as the Japanese picked themselves off the floor and stoically set about rebuilding their mentally and physically shattered country. It was the complete embodiment of the national sense of ‘gambari’ – the sense that it is important to continue in the face of adversity, to roll up ones sleeves and get on with things.
