Favourite places
Luang Prabang in Laos – one of the most peaceful, serene and beautiful cities in Asia (in my opinion). Then of course New Zealand is hard to top, although think I’m fairly biased with my sister living there and having only just returned so recently. Cappadocia in Turkey is totally unlike anywhere else – actually feels like you’re on a film set or part of a fairy tale. Finally the plains of Bagan in Burma – just amazing!
Travel things I want to do before I die
Visit Bhutan and trek through the Himalayas, spend time on a live aboard dive boat in Indonesia, and drive across America (ideally in one of those silver airstream campervans!). See the Northern Lights, do a flying safari in Namibia along the Skeleton coast, learn to kitesurf (of course in an exotic country such as Egypt, rather than in the UK!)
Best moments
Watching the sunset over the Irrawaddy River in Burma while conversing with a Buddhist monk who spoke English with a cockney accent! Taking a dawn hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia in Turkey and diving on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Managing to go through with an early morning skydive over Lake Taupo in New Zealand (miles more enjoyable than a Bungee jump which I have no intention of doing again if I can help it!)
Worst moments
Mistaking a bee hive in South Africa for your average wooden box and knocking the lid off before running like hell in the opposite direction! Getting stuck in a cave underground in New Zealand behind a rather large man who’d managed to wedge himself in the tunnel, it took a lot of pushing from me and heaving from those in front to prise him out!
Strangest trip
Probably not the strangest (I’m still thinking on that one) but having to spend about half an hour outside Bangkok airport waiting to be allowed through the doors as apparently the Miss World contestants were departing back to their home countries and as it was one of the biggest events of that year in the country, entry of all others not involved was temporarily prevented – a little on the strange side!!
