Favourite places
Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, Varanasi in India, Tulum as well as the jungle in Palenque in Mexico.
Travel things I want to do before I die
Iran – the friendliest people and most culturally rewarding of experiences. Tibet – see the real Tibet (which I’m nervous I may have missed). Go trekking in Patagonia, explore Africa –sounds vague but I’ve travelled so little in Africa I wouldn’t know where to start.
Best moments
I go through stages. I’m in an Indian stage now so one of my best moments-of-the-minute was soaking up the colours and noises of Varanasi from a boat on the Ganges. A place where the spiritual rubs shoulders with frenzied chaos – a contrast India has nailed. But plunging into the Ocean in Western Australia away from the mayhem of spotter planes and dive master shrieks, to the relative tranquillity of under-water snorkelling alongside a whale shark has to be a contender…
Toughest travel moment
Attempting to buy train tickets, or anything at all in China.
Weirdest travel moment
Roaming around lost in the Mexican jungle with animals falling out all over the place – well that’s what it felt like. And being dumped on a deserted Belizian island at the insistence of my friend reminiscing about amazing past experiences. Times change – places become deserted – move on, and trust the locals when they laugh at your request to be dumped there.
