Best moments

It's a tough one given that I have been so lucky to have travelled throughout Africa and having lived the majority of it in Kenya. Perhaps it has to be a helicopter safari around Southern Kenya, stopping off for sundowners at Shompole lodge. The views were over the Nguruman escarpment were jaw-droppingly stunning. This has to be closely followed by seeing a huge pod of Humpback whales when flying around the Quirimbas Archipelago in Northern Mozambique. The pilot dipped his wing and flew as close as he could. It was certainly not a flight for the faint hearted! Or maybe it is the early morning paddle on a mokoro (dug out canoe) in the Okavango Delta in Botswana during the height of the flood season, with a surprise breakfast waiting for us as we came around a bend.

Best avoided

Going on safari with an in-experienced guide. Being on safari is all about having the best guides available who take a whole hearted interest in guaranteeing you get the best possible experience from your safari. There are so many lodges out there with guides who are simply not up to scratch and you can be staying in the most amazing camp but if you have a bad guide it will make for a disappointing trip.
